چکیده

In large-angle elastic scattering events of keV electrons a significant amount of momentum is transferred from the electron to a nucleus in the target. As a consequence kinetic energy is transferred from the energetic electron to the nucleus, and hence these processes can be referred to as ‘quasi-elastic’. How much energy is transferred depends on the mass of the nucleus. In this paper, we present measurements from a two-layer system (a germanium layer and a carbon layer), and at high energies the quasi-elastic peaks of Ge and C are clearly resolved. It is demonstrated that the sample geometry has a huge effect on the observed relative intensities. It is shown that the intensities are influenced by the elastic scattering cross-section of the atoms in the film, film composition and selective attenuation, due to varying amount of inelastic scattering for layers of the film. However truly quantitative agreement is not obtained. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Contact Problem of an Elastic Layer Compressed by Two Punches of Different Radii

The elasticity mixed boundary values problems dealing with half-space contact are generally well resolved. A large number of these solutions are obtained by using the integral transformation method and methods based the integral equations. However, the problems of finite layer thicknesses are less investigated, despite their practical interests. This study resolves a quasi-stationary problem of...

Comparison of electron-nucleus quasi-elastic cross sections using spectral functions with (e, e) data from 0.5 GeV to 1.5 GeV and effects on neutrino quasi-elastic cross sections

We carry out a relativistic calculation of the cross sections of electron-O and -C quasi-elastic scattering and quasi-free ∆ production and compare with the (e, e) data systematically in the wide energy range of 0.5 – 1.5 GeV. Using the same formalism, we examine the νμ quasi-elastic scattering from O. The model incorporating the nuclear correlation effects agrees better with the electron-nucle...

Parity-Violating Electron-Deuteron Scattering

The longitudinal asymmetry due to Z0 exchange is calculated in quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at momentum transfers |Q2| ' 0.1 GeV2 relevant for the SAMPLE experiment. The deuteron and pn scattering-state wave functions are obtained from solutions of a Schrödinger equation with the Argonne v18 potential. Electromagnetic and weak neutral oneand two-nucleon currents are included in th...

A STUDY OF GAMMA RAY EXPOSURE BUILDUP FACTORS IN STRATIFIED SHIELDS FOR POINT ISOTROPIC SOURCES, INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF INCOHERENT AND COHERENT SCATTERING

The effects of including incoherent (bound-electron) and coherent (Rayleigh) scattering in exposure buildup factor calculations for point isotropic gamma ray sources, penetrating a two-layer water-lead shield have been investigated in the gamma ray energy (E?) range of 40 keV to 3 MeV. Incoherent scattering decreases the values of these factors in both layers up to E? ~ 200 keV and the effect i...

Measurement of elastic electron-neutron scattering and inelastic electron-deuteron scattering cross sections at high momentum transfer.

We have measured inelastic electron-deuteron, electron-proton, and electron-aluminum cross sections at 10' in the kinematic region between-elastic deuteron scattering and the second resonance region at six beam energies between 9.8 and 21 GeV. The elastic electron-neutron cross section was extracted from the quasi-elastic data at Q2 = 2.5, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 (GeV/c)'. The ratio of elastic c...
